With the release of three more Star Wars movies since LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga came out, I was excited to try out the full set of Star Wars films in the LEGO universe. Of course, while LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga satisfies this requirement, several years had passed since the heyday of the LEGO movie adaptation video games. The “open world” style of game became popular and pushed Skywalker Saga into a design that didn’t quite work since they didn’t fully commit to the new layout.

While the graphics and voice acting were improvements from the previous LEGO Star Wars games, the magic just wasn’t there anymore. Most levels felt tedious and longer than they had to be, and even the collectibles took much more effort to obtain, even after playing through the story mode. Add to this that unlocking the characters isn’t as simple as it used to be and that I won most battles with button mashing, regardless of the character’s other traits, and it just felt like a slog to get through this game’s story mode. By the time I was done, I didn’t want to play the game anymore.

The kicker is that this game could have worked as a fuller open-world experience. Instead, I found myself schlepping across the galaxy between each level I played just to get to the right planet where the plot would continue. Sure, that’s how the movies progressed, but adding extra mileage between cut-scenes isn’t a fun way to play a game. Even once you’ve played all the levels, the collectible quests have you do the same traveling across the universe, and I simply do not have time for that kind of game anymore.

A disappointing implementation of the full Star Wars saga, I give LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 3.0 stars out of 5.
