Vampire Survivors, but it’s in Virtual Reality
Year: 2025

OK, I’ll admit that the game clearly using gambling and slot machine mechanics to dazzle my senses has convinced me to play through it all again, but in virtual reality (VR). For what it’s worth, Vampire Survivors, but it’s in Virtual Reality is basically a port of the original game that you play on a screen inside a virtual environment, but there are a few enhancements that make this version the one I keep coming back to when I could instead play the original game on my laptop or mobile phone.
This isn’t simply Vampire Survivors that you play inside a VR headset. Instead, you get these 3D effects for your characters that add depth to what was a 2D top-down experience. Then there’s the chest opening animation, which is even more spectacular in VR (as you’d expect of that slot machine razzle dazzle). To top everything off, the environments where you’re playing this game are perhaps the best little enhancement to this game, as they represent the area/level where you’re playing and change based on how far you are into that run. This attention to detail is something I really appreciate.
That you have to play this in full VR and not just as an augmented reality (AR) game that’s in your living room does mean that you can’t be paying attention to other things when you play it. Perhaps this forced focus is why I like this version, since I tend to use Vampire Survivors as a second-screen game when I’m watching TV and the immersive experience here is part of the fun. I do find the secret code implementation is a bit challenging without a keyboard or touchscreen, but that’s such a late part of the game that it doesn’t affect the rest of the playthrough.
An immersive port of a simple 2D game, I give Vampire Survivors, but it’s in Virtual Reality 4.0 stars out of 5.
