The best kind of science fiction uses fantastical elements to hold a harsh mirror up to the ills of society. One of the best examples of this is Neill Blomkamp\u2019s District 9<\/em> (2009) being an analog for apartheid in South Africa. Sure, it has fun sci-fi elements like the alien weapons and technology, but at its core there\u2019s a solid commentary about racism and the caste system that does nothing to fix it. That it\u2019s still relevant today just speaks to the strength of its message\u2014one that needs no sequel or follow-up movie.<\/p>\n

District 9<\/em>\u2019s story benefits from the visual effects used to put these bug-like aliens smack dab in the middle of refugee camps in Johannesburg. The aliens look so realistic, and the CGI is sharp and crisp in a way that even modern films have since failed to replicate. Even the transformation of Wikus (Sharlto Copley) into the \u201cprawn\u201d form seems natural and horrifying at the same time. Shooting in mostly hand-held camera modes gives the whole mockumentary a grounded feel that helps to sell the narrative. This movie was definitely groundbreaking, and it holds up many years later.<\/p>\n

For a first feature-length film, Neill Blomkamp hits it out of the park here. It probably helped that District 9<\/em> is based on a short film of similar subject matter. And while later entries in his filmography are mixed, District 9<\/em> is an excellent example of new talent hitting the market and making a big splash. I only hope that there will be more opportunities for new filmmakers in the future who can use the medium to speak out about xenophobia and the empathy we all need for each other, like Blomkamp did here.<\/p>\n

The best sci-fi commentary on racism and xenophobia, I give District 9<\/em> 5.0 stars out of 5.<\/p>\n
