When it comes to the\u00a0Ender<\/em>\u00a0saga, I was excited to read the direct sequel to\u00a0Ender\u2019s Game<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Ender in Exile<\/em>. After all,\u00a0Speaker for the Dead<\/a><\/em>\u00a0was set so far after the events in\u00a0Ender\u2019s Game<\/em>\u00a0that there was a distinct division between the first book in the series and the following three (almost like\u00a0The Hobbit<\/em>\u00a0when compared to\u00a0The Lord of the Rings<\/em>). And yet, while there was a huge gap between the first two books of the\u00a0Ender<\/em>\u00a0saga, there was enough explanation about what had happened between them that\u00a0Ender in Exile<\/em>\u00a0seemed a little unnecessary.<\/p>\n

My biggest problem with this book was that I haven\u2019t started on the\u00a0Shadow<\/em>\u00a0spinoff series, so a lot of the revelations presented in this book essentially spoiled those books for me. If you\u2019re wondering when to read\u00a0Ender in Exile<\/em>, I\u2019d suggest reading\u00a0Ender\u2019s Game<\/em>, followed by the\u00a0Shadow<\/em>\u00a0saga, and then read this book before continuing to the end of the\u00a0Ender<\/em>\u00a0saga with\u00a0Speaker for the Dead<\/em>. I\u2019ll still read the\u00a0Shadow<\/em>\u00a0series, mostly because I want to know the details of these other characters\u2019 lives, but now I have an idea what the twists will be.<\/p>\n

Despite telling a story that perhaps doesn\u2019t need to be told, I am still impressed with Orson Scott Card\u2019s ability to write plots that require a lot of tough decisions on behalf of the characters. I also enjoy how strategic Ender and Graff are when dealing with circumstances that I\u2019m sure most sci-fi authors would never think to include in their stories. In the end, while I have raved about the main\u00a0Ender<\/em>\u00a0series, this feels a bit tacked on and only exists to explain away a few continuity errors that were present in the first books before they expanded into the universe they now inhabit.<\/p>\n

The direct sequel to\u00a0Ender\u2019s Game<\/em>\u00a0that didn\u2019t necessarily need to be written, I give\u00a0Ender in Exile<\/em>\u00a03.5 stars out of 5.<\/p>\n
