At this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I feel these movies are practically on autopilot. Because Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) were absent from\u00a0Captain America: Civil War<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2016), there had to be a movie to explain what they were doing during that timeframe. Consequently, while\u00a0Civil War<\/em>\u00a0had great conflict and an epic battle sequence,\u00a0Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0(2017) feels . . . less necessary. This being said, I do think that\u00a0Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0explores the Thor universe better than\u00a0Thor: The Dark World<\/em>\u00a0(2013) did, thus making me wonder if\u00a0Dark World<\/em>\u00a0was truly the unnecessary film.<\/p>\n

Sure, there are little snippets here and there in these films that set up other parts of the franchise (mainly, the Infinity Stones that will lead to\u00a0Avengers: The Infinity War<\/em>\u00a0(2018)), as well as minor cameos that are fun, if not wholly filler (Doctor Strange<\/a> (Benedict Cumberbatch) in the case of\u00a0Ragnarok<\/em>). All\u00a0Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0seems to do is set the stage for the next big film in the franchise. That\u2019s not to say it\u2019s not fun and entertaining. There is plenty that\u00a0Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0has going for it, that\u2019s for sure. At the very least, it probably won\u2019t be relegated to a two-minute play put on for Asgardian royalty.<\/p>\n

While being bright and colorful, there were still enough moments of character development that concluded\u00a0in a flashy spectacle. Where\u00a0Dark World<\/em>\u00a0brought humans to Asgard, thus necessitating Thor\u2019s eventual return to Earth,\u00a0Ragnarok<\/em> explored the universe connected to Asgard in a way that helped to develop the MCU. The humor in\u00a0Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0was also on point, with Jeff Goldblum\u2019s Grandmaster and Taika Waititi\u2019s Korg being some of the best dialogue in the film. I also enjoyed the minor cameos of Liam Hemsworth and Matt Damon in a \u201cblink and you\u2019ll miss it\u201d moment.<\/p>\n

An entertaining setup for greater things to come, I give\u00a0Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a03.5 stars out of 5.<\/p>\n
